My Album Advert
January 5, 2011
My Album advert will has the album cover on it, details of the album, and loud colours. It will be similar to the album advert below as the photograph below stands out from other photos which means people will be attracted to the advert.
The album cover in the advert will be a black and white medium close up shot with only the neon things in colour including coloured hair. To show them as feminists, one girl will have her hands covering her breasts, and one girl will be wiping off her lipstick and one pulling down her belly/crop top.
My magazine article
January 1, 2011
I have chosen to do an interview for my band for ‘More!’ magazine because it has a mass audience of young loyal females who it every week, which is why it would be good for me to promote the band in it. Also the girl band The Saturdays did an interview for ‘More!’ which was very successful so if it worked for them then it is likely to work for me as well.
This is ‘The Saturdays’ article in ‘More!’ magazine:
My Band
January 1, 2011
Name: Neon Dolls
Members: Aida Dames: The fun and enthusiastic one. Appeals to bubbly girls. Age: 17.
Alina Edward: The quite but daring and wild one. Appeals to the fearless opinionated girls. Age 17.
Tyra Tadman: The innocent babyish one. Appeals to the babyish, childlike, innocent girls. Age 17.
Genre: Hip-hop and R & B.
Image: The image that I want the girls to have is a normal relaxed image of girls who just want to have fun. They will first be aimed at 13-17 year old girls who are growing up and looking for someone to aspire to be, and someone that they can relate to. Girls will be attracted to them because of the messages they send about fun and how girls should be treated by males. The girls will be seen as ‘real’ which is why people will like them.
From the research I did I found out that girl bands who immediately go for the sexy grown up look are not successful because people like to see artists grow, so if girl bands act like they’re already grown then where can they grow to.Which is why after the girls have been introduced as the chilled out, young, fun girls and as the years go on the looks will slowly begin to change and become more sexier and mature to appeal to a bigger audience which may include males and older people.

Album Advert
Album advertisements are a good way to promote albums because they can be put in many places which means that they’ll be seen by many people. Album adverts need to stand out from other adverts and to do this, they need to be loud and different. This may mean using bold colours, big font sizes or capital letters.
Album adverts need to have the album release date, the name of the album, and an image or similar image used for the album cover.

Magazine Articles
Girl bands are usually in young female magazines because they have a mass audience who are similar to the band’s audience. The magazines usually have details about fashion and since girl bands usually wear fashion trends, that’s another reason they’re in these magazines. Most of the magazines below are very similar because of the colours used like pink and red which are gurlie colours, and because of their customers. These magazines also usually have a bit of gossip in them because the band’s fans want to know more about the band.
Magazines are a good way of promoting the band because a lot of detail about the bands tour or album can be put in it, and many people will but magazines especially when there’s a famous band in it.

Successful Girl Bands
The Spice Girls
Genre: Pop
Their image & how they appealed to their audience: The Spice Girls started out as a group of five girls who seemed to be all about friendship and having fun. In their first hit song ‘Wannabe’ we see them crash an upper class party and dancing around, and we hear the memorable main chorus line which is ‘if you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friend’ which immediately told us that there all about being their for each other. It was because of this fun, free and loyal image that people especially young people of all ages were attracted to them. Their audience were able to aspire to be them, and follow the girls as they made fashion statements and toured the world. After ‘wannabe’ there were many number one songs which were both slow and fast so they appealed to many people. As time developed the Spice Girls never changed themselves for anyone, and they always remained their colourful and unique selves. Something that may have appealed to the British audience were that the Spice Girls were British, born and raised, and British people are proud and like British things.
The Spice Girls sold over 23 million (worldwide) of their debut album (Wikipedia).
TLC
Genre: R & B
Their image & how they appealed to their audience: TLC were a group of 3 young girls from America who created hit songs like ‘No Scrubs’ and ‘Waterfalls’. From the beginning we could see that these girls were all about being young, being silly, and living by no rules, as we saw from their video ‘Aint to proud to beg.’ We learnt that these girls didn’t mind looking silly as long as they got their message across. For example one member Lisa ‘left eye’ Lopes didn’t mind dancing around with a condom on her eye to promote safe sex. These girls were also known for being slight womanists since they sang about the type of man they didn’t want, and even about cheating on your man if he cheats on you. People loved this free spirit in them, and liked the fact that they contributed to writing their songs. They could appeal to different audiences because people saw the inner child in all of them, and still saw the sexy sophisticated side to them. Also their style was very unique as they wore outfits that stood out, relaxed and edgy. People looked to them to see what the fashion trends were, and for messages in their songs to help guide them. Also many girls could relate to the girls because they were young, loved music, and loved to be free.
Currently TLC are the biggest R&B group in the world ever, with over 45 million sales (Wikipedia).
Girls Aloud
Genre: Pop
Their image and how they appealed to their audience: Girls Aloud are a group of 5 girls who were chosen by the British public in 2002 on a show called ‘Popstars: The Rivals.’ This would automatically give the girls fans since they must like the girls to pick up the phone and vote for them. From the start the girls were represented as ordinary girls with a dream of making music, and every time they were seen they were dressed in simple clothing like a denim skirt and a t-shirt. All this attracted many young girls because Girls Aloud seemed laid back like them, and ordinary like them. Girls aloud weren’t wearing high fashion expensive designer clothing, and people liked this because they could relate to them. Also since all the girls were from the United Kingdom this attracted people even more because they gave the UK something to be proud of since other British girl bands were breaking up. Also they gave all the British girls aspiration and made them think that they could be like them. Another big thing that attracted an audience to the band was their first song ‘Sound of the underground’. People were expecting the girls to sing a typical slow and ‘cheesy’ girl band song since they just came of a reality TV show, but it was surprising, raw and different and people liked this.
Girls Aloud had made £30 million by May 2010 (Wikipedia).
The Saturdays
Genre: Pop
Their image and how it appeals to their audience: The Saturdays consist of 5 young talented girls, and two of them name Frankie and Rochelle were in a another band when they were younger called S Club juniors, which means that when joining The Saturdays it is likely that they’ll still have fans which automatically gives the band fans. The girls are seen as 5 close good friends who have many things in common as we see on their ITV show, and who love to be singers but also just love to relax, be social, be young and have fun. This appeals to many people especially young females because they can relate to their current relaxed outfits, their personalities, and the fact that we see that they make mistakes as well. They also make younger girls aspire to be them because of their talent and friendly nature. Also the girls dating young celebrities such as Marvin Humes, Dougie Poynter, Ben Foden, Adam Chandler and Andy Brown. gives them more publicity, and it’s likely that with publicity comes fans. The difference between The Saturdays and girl bands that didn’t ‘make it’ are that we were introduced to The Saturdays as young fun talented girls, and other bands such as ‘Girlicious’ were introduced to us as these sexual girls and people are not attracted to that because a mass audience can’t relate to this. Sex appeal can be added to the band later.
The Saturdays have had 8 top 10 singles, and have sold over 2 million records (Wikipedia).
